Los Angeles-based brand Hoorsenbuhs was born from an innate attraction to jewellery of all sorts. Founder Robert Keith’s career has run the fashion gamut, ranging from stylist to photographer, and finally designer, resulting in a well-rounded expertise and aesthetic. After collecting jewellery from a young age, Keith finally asked himself, “What do I want to make?”
“Designing was a natural progression. I was always searching for unique objects and had a personal obsession with gold in particular as a medium. The history, the weight, the feeling, alchemy, the meld of many contributions continues to fascinate and capture my attention.”
“When it came to the technical side of things, Keith learnt ‘from the school of hard knocks’ …”
When it came to the technical side of things, Keith learnt “from the school of hard knocks” and followed some good advice from his mother on persistence.
Having collaborated with heavyweights such as Jay-Z, Barney’s New York and Damien Hirst, Hoorsenbuhs has become one of the most recognisable luxury jewellery brands in America. “When you put your heart into what you’re doing people can feel it and that’s what’s attractive. We take great care of our brand and its heritage.”
“Each collection takes inspiration from the Hoorsenbuhs maker’s mark, the classic tri-link …”
Each collection takes inspiration from the Hoorsenbuhs maker’s mark, the classic tri-link, as well as from items around Keith’s Santa Monica atelier. The equestrian feel, however, was not intentional. “There must be something about the smooth edges and classic shapes incorporated into my designs that remind people of the hardware used in the equestrian world.” As for the name of the brand, “It’s pure coincidence!”
